International Higher Education Consulting was again sponsoring the 2019 IEI (International Educators of Illinois) conference March 14-15, 2019 in Wheaton, Illinois

This was my fourth straight year sponsoring the IEI conference.  All sponsors are listed on the conference Exhibitors & Sponsors page and I'm happy to have been a part of that group!  Unfortunately, I wasn't be able to attend this year and I hope all had a great and productive conference!

International Higher Education Consulting is an official sponsor of the 2016 International Educators of Illinois (IEI) Conference being held March 23-24, 2016. I was added as a late presenter to the panel talking about "The Power of Habit in International Education" and I'll be presenting with Sara McGuinn of Northwestern University (session Chair) and Derek Shouba of Morton College.

I will be attending the conference all day as well as the evening reception on Thursday, March 24th but won't be attending/presenting at a workshop on Wednesday, March 23rd as I will be giving a talk at Morton College that day to faculty and other key stakeholders on globalizing the curriculum and syllabus.  However, I do plan to attend the informal reception scheduled in the evening on Wednesday, March 23rd.  If you are attending the IEI conference I do hope our paths cross!

You can view the conference program below to view my presentation description (page 21) and sponsorship advertisement (page 11).

One of my Favorite Places for International Education Researching and Writing

Remembering one of my summer 2015 work stations on the shores of Lake Michigan in Door County, Wisconsin where I began work on my 'A Historical Overview of International Education Scholarship and the Role of the Scholar–Practitioner' chapter for the forthcoming book "International Higher Education's Scholar-Practitioners: Bridging Research and Practice".  Soon I'll begin work on a new book chapter that I will co-write with two other colleagues (unable to disclose chapter title or focus of book at this time) but I won't have as nice of an "office" this time around!

That IHEC Blog post on the computer screen is about and includes photos of my thirteen year old daughter heading off on her twelve day service learning trip to Ecuador last August!

I'm working to get through the IHEC inbox...

The number of e-mail messages from colleagues in the field and others to my international.ed.consulting@gmail.com seeking assistance and advise is tremendous (meaning I receive more than I can respond to) and greatly appreciated (I recieve quite a bit to my Univ. of Chicago address as well).

I apologize if you have sent me a message in the last 6+ months and I haven't replied.  I receive on average 3-4 requests per week and I struggle to find the time to respond and assist outside of my full-time job of father to three and husband to one and my work at the University of Chicago as well as a few paid side projects.

I'm working to get through the inbox...

International Higher Education Consulting website has new look

I have a healthy web presence within the international education community and the main website for my side consulting work International Higher Education Consulting can be found at davidcomp.wordpress.com/.  My other main website, IHEC Blog (where this post originated from), could arguably be called my home base as it is much more popular and the content is more robust and frequent.  I do have plans to rework and rethink my entire web presence and social media strategy but for now all is currently working very well for me and all roads lead to my International Higher Education Consulting website.  For some time now I've been thinking and working to change the look and feel of the website and after numerous small adjustments I have what I think will be the final product (until I decide to change yet again).  Below is a screen shot of the new site with one of my favorite posts.  What do you think?

We need students. For each student you bring us, we give you a 100 euros comission

Some time ago I received the following message via LinkedIn [identification information removed by me].

"Hi David, cordial greetings from Xxxxx.  We offer Xxxxxxx courses in Xxxxx and we are interested in working with you.  We need students.  For each student you bring us, we give you a 100 euros comission.  Contact us if you are interested in.  Thanks."

What are your thoughts on this?

For me, well...um, no thanks.  Not for me (on numerous levels) so I did not reply and I archived the message.

Don't get me wrong, if someone wants to pay me 100 Euros to do some simple work please do not hesitate to contact me and we'll discuss!

5 Years and 900+ Posts on International Higher Education Consulting Blog

Just over five years ago, on February 4, 2007, I decided to start International Higher Education Consulting Blog (aka IHEC Blog) and put up my first post "Initiatives in 2006 to Increase Diversity in Education Abroad".  I didn't know what I was doing (a quick look at the URL <http://ihec-djc.blogspot.com/> I came up with demonstrates that!) but I knew I wanted to create my own international education space on the internet where I could inform, provoke, engage and archive.  I hope I have done that...

IHEC Blog pushed me to create related internet properties and I have enjoyed playing in these spaces as well.  I've met many great people along the way.  Some I have met in person and for some our paths have yet to cross!

IHEC Blog has gone farther than I ever imagined.  Today, IHEC Blog is one of five blogs worldwide selected by the New York Times editors to feed into the 'Headlines Around the Web' area of the International Education section of the New York Times online.

I've been doing much thinking about IHEC Blog the last several months and where to take it next.  Any significant changes will come after I complete my dissertation which takes a long time to complete when you have a full-time job and three young children so later in 2012 or early 2013 is now the target.  I do hope to have more guest bloggers and perhaps a regular contributor join the fun [more on this development once finally confirmed] and I'm very excited for this to happen!

Thanks to everyone who has come along for the ride and I look forward to more years to come!

David Comp and IHEC Blog will not be attending the 2011 NAFSA Annual Conference in Vancouver

Unfortunately, I won't be attending the upcoming NAFSA annual conference but will be with everyone in spirit!  I will be following the conference backchannel discussion via Twitter and the #nafsa11 hashtag which has already been pretty active (much more than last year) and that you can view below.  I'm looking forward to crossing paths with friends and colleagues again at a future international education conference in the not too distant future I hope.

New Global Ed Listserv for Consultants

Following is a message my colleague Missy Gluckman of Melibee Global sent yesterday to the SECUSS-L listserv.  I'm copying and pasting the message here on IHEC Blog as I'm involved in this new initiative.  I should note that Missy is the driving force behind this effort and she deserves all of the credit as I'm really just coming along for the ride.  Many many thanks Missy!!  I'll be posting more soon about what Missy is doing for the field as it is really exciting.  Visit her website and blog at http://melibeeglobal.com/ when you have a chance.  Here is our message:

Greetings,

We invite international ed consultants to join a newly formed discussion group on google: Global Ed Consultants

The purpose of this group is to share information about our consulting services, to network, and to discuss the joy (and surprises!) of the  consulting field. Our philosophy is that collaboration is MUCH more effective than competition, so we hope to support each other and provide an outlet for discussion, especially since many of us work from home and cannot  physically travel to every conference.

Please note that you should be an international education consultant to join this group.

Here is the link to join: http://groups.google.com/group/Globaledconsult/about

Feel free to email should you have any questions or comments!

Best,
Missy and David

International Higher Education Consulting site has a new look and feel

My International Higher Education Consulting site (not IHEC Blog) has a new look and feel.  You can access this site at http://davidcomp.wordpress.com/.  Once my dissertation is complete I will probably work towards a different and more integrated web presence but for the moment my various sites are serving their purpose.

Thanks for coming along for the ride!

International Higher Education Consulting and Bury Book International Education Library & Archive are Greener and will now "Save as WWF"

International Higher Education Consulting and all of my side activities such as Bury Book International Education Library & Archive are going green and will now "Save as WWF"!  Actually, I've always been as Green as possible. Moving forward from today, all documents that I would typically save and distribute in PDF format will be saved in WWF format!  What is WWF format?  Simply put, the WWF format is similar to a PDF but it cannot be printed!  You can save documents (including websites and e-mail messages) in WWF format.  As time permits, I will also begin to reformat current Bury Book resources that are in PDF and Word formats into the new WWF format.  This, however, will take a bit of time...

I encourage all international education organizations, programs, professionals, students and others to make the switch to "Save as WWF" and at the very least to "Think Before You Print".  Learn more about WWF format at http://www.saveaswwf.com/en/.

Many thanks to Weidong Zhang (@Ahjim on Twitter) for posting about this to Twitter as this is where I first learned of WWF format!
