New Book: International Higher Education's Scholar-Practitioners: Bridging Research and Practice
Edited by BERNHARD STREITWIESER and ANTHONY C. OGDEN
The idea of the professional who bridges both research and practice has been largely overlooked and at times even disregarded by the academic and administrative structures that govern activity in higher education today. In international higher education, the number of students who now engage in mobility and exchange has expanded globally, along with the administrative cadre that manages all facets of internationalization, and the quickly growing scholarly attention to understanding the phenomenon. In this process, two distinct professional categories have emerged: those who ‘study it’ and those who ‘do it’ – the scholars and the practitioners. Practitioners are seen as those who manage the daily logistical flow of students and personnel around the globe, while scholars are seen as those who conduct research, collect and analyze data, and publish findings to inform, improve, and justify the activity. Yet this dichotomy is overly simplistic, outdated, and excludes the large and growing class of hybrid scholar-practitioners who now engage regularly in both kinds of activity.
It is this rapidly growing population of bridge builders that are profiled and discussed in this book through critical essays on the notion of the scholar-practitioner and its implication for the further development of international higher education. The chapters include detailed analyses from university faculty, senior international officers and other high-level administrators, directors of research centers, key leaders from influential professional associations and private organizations, managers of study abroad and exchange, and graduate students. This book launches a much-needed dialogue about the perception and reality, potential and promise, of the scholar-practitioner in higher education today. It will be of relevance to a wide variety of readers, from those within universities and organizations to those who are outside observers of higher education.

One of my Favorite Places for International Education Researching and Writing
Remembering one of my summer 2015 work stations on the shores of Lake Michigan in Door County, Wisconsin where I began work on my 'A Historical Overview of International Education Scholarship and the Role of the Scholar–Practitioner' chapter for the forthcoming book "International Higher Education's Scholar-Practitioners: Bridging Research and Practice". Soon I'll begin work on a new book chapter that I will co-write with two other colleagues (unable to disclose chapter title or focus of book at this time) but I won't have as nice of an "office" this time around!
That IHEC Blog post on the computer screen is about and includes photos of my thirteen year old daughter heading off on her twelve day service learning trip to Ecuador last August!

Collections at the University of Chicago.
The exhibition is on view in the Special Collections

You can read, see a few items from the collection and learn
more at:
To be sure, viewing this exhibit is easiest done by those in
the Chicagoland area or those who will find themselves in the city while the
exhibit is open. I have yet to visit the exhibit so I am unable to comment but I have penciled in a date to visit next week.
[note that Summer Quarter classes end Saturday, August 30th so based on my understanding the exhibit would be open this coming Saturday and Autumn Quarter classes begin at the UofC on Monday, September 29th which would make October 4th the last day of the exhibit and an open day you can view on a Saturday]

Call for nominations: 2013 Award for Innovative Research & Scholarship in Internationalization
I'm posting the following to IHEC Blog at the request of the NAFSA TLS KC team.
The Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship (TLS) Knowledge Community of NAFSA is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2012 Award for Innovative Research & Scholarship in Internationalization, and Call for Nominations for the 2013 selection process.
This annual award honors those who have made substantial contributions to theory and practice that can be applied across the field of international education. The award specifically honors "path-breaking" research and scholarship, from veterans and early to mid-career researchers alike, that has changed how we as international educators advance our work. The 2012 Award for Innovative Research & Scholarship in Internationalization goes to Bruce La Brack for providing a deep understanding of how culture concepts across multiple disciplines, including anthropology and intercultural communications, are actually learned and interpreted by students, and how micro level interventions, including re-entry programs, can be used to improve student learning. His work highlights the complexities of how internationalization changes individuals and how theory can be applied to practice. Congratulations to La Brack on this award and his many contributions to the international education field! A call for nominations and criteria for the 2013 selection cycle have been posted at www.nafsa.org/TLSaward. Nominations should be done by a peer or can be self-nominations, and must be accompanied by copies of works/publications to be reviewed. Nomination materials and questions should be addressed to tlsaward@nafsa.org. Nominations will be accepted until July 29, 2012.
We hope you will consider nominating a colleague, or nominating yourself, and participating in this new effort to recognize innovative research.
Sincerely,
The TLS Leadership Team

What is the first data set you turn to when you look at Open Doors data?
When I first visit the Open Doors website I first turn to the student profile data within the study abroad section. I'm interested in seeing what progress, if any, has been made in changing the face of the U.S. study abroad population. To be sure, I spend a lot of time sifting through the data and crunch some of the numbers to provide additional insight not covered by IIE Research and Program Evaluation Services staff.
Where do you first turn when you check out Open Doors data?

Provide Feedback on the Development of an International Education Research Network (IERN)
Tonight I learned from the IDP Database of Research on International Education via Twitter at @IDPDRIE and IERES-L that The International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) is developing an International Education Research Network. Those of you who know me well will understand that this is very exciting news for the field and I thank IEAA for taking on this important effort!
IEAA has launched a brief survey (approx. 5 minutes) seeking feedback on the development of IERN. Readers who are conducting or are interested in the academic/research side of our field please visit http://www.ieaa.org.au/researchnetwork where you can learn more about this effort (including a brief discussion paper available for download) and complete the survey!
