Graduate Student Research at 2014 NAFSA National Conference in San Diego

Are you a graduate student in international education interested in presenting your research? If yes, I was wondering if you would be interested in presenting your research at 2014 NAFSA national conference in San Diego. The name of the session will be “Graduate Student Research” where students will present their research and then the audience will be giving feedback. Presentation will be 5-7 minutes long. We will have a Skype talk to discuss the details of this panel before submitting the proposal. This can be a wonderful opportunity to present at national conference and receive feedback from professionals in the field.

If you know other people who would be interested, send me their names and contact information.

The deadline for NAFSA 2014 conference is August 1st. Please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested.

Hope to hear from you!

My Declining Presence at International Education Conferences

Over the past few years my attendance at international education conferences has dwindled.  I have missed the past three Forum on Education Abroad conferences (my last one was Portland in 2009) and the past two NAFSA: Association of International Educators conferences (my last one was Kansas City in 2010) and the past four CIEE conferences (my last one was Toronto in 2007).  I did manage to make it to the CIES conference in Chicago in 2010 to present but my time at this conference consisted of arriving 30 minutes before my presentation and leaving 30 minutes after my presentation ended so I really can’t say I attended the conference (my only CIES conference I have seen) as I only presented at the Chicago CIES conference.  This also sums up the amount of time I spent at the 2011 NAFSA Region V conference in Champaign, Illinois (my last NAFSA Region V conference was in 2004 in Ann Arbor, Michigan) as I was also in and out of the conference venue only to present and say hello to a few friends and colleagues.  I did attend the entire 2010 U.S. Summit for Global Citizen Diplomacy in Washington, D.C. and it was a worthwhile event.
There are several reasons for this decline such as dissertation conflicts, lack of funds (almost all of my previous conference participation was self-funded) or lack of support.
I do hope to attend the 2013 Forum on Education Abroad conference as it will be in Chicago and perhaps the NAFSA conference in St. Louis in 2013.  CIEE 2012 in Shanghai is definitely out for me but who knows about 2013 in Minneapolis!?!?!
I will attend the annual conference of the Partnership in International Management (PIM) in Lima, Peru in late October (in many ways PIM has become my new NAFSA) and next week I will attend the Peer Schools International Educators [group of top business schools in the U.S.]  meeting at Stanford Graduate School of Business for a couple of days (in many ways Peer Schools has become my new Forum although on a much, much smaller scale] so I’m not totally out of the conference/meeting circuit…it’s just changing!  Last month I attended my first Chicago NAFSA Roundtable meeting since I worked in the Office of International Affairs at The University of Chicago seven years ago.

The 2012 AIEA Annual Conference focuses on "Building A Secure World Through International Education"

Catering to senior international officers from around the world, the 2012 Annual Conference of the Association of International Education Administrators (A.I.E.A.) focuses on “Building a Secure World through International Education.”

Taking place February 19-22 at the J.W. Marriott in Washington, D.C., the conference features speakers Eboo Patel, Founder and President of Interfaith Youth Core; Botswana-based Justice Unity Dow, lawyer, activist and writer; and Abiodun Williams, Vice President of the Center for Conflict Analysis and Prevention at the United States Institute for Peace.

On February 18, AIEA collaborates with the American Council on Education (A.C.E.) for an all-day meeting on “The Collaborative Advantage: Exploring the Next Horizon in Global Engagement.”

Pre-conference workshops, including collaborations with the American Council on Education (A.C.E.), the American Association of Colleges and Universities (A.A.C.&U.), the European Association for International Education (E.A.I.E.), and the National Association of College and University Business Officers (N.A.C.U.B.O.) take place February 19 and 20, with themes including “Strategic Leadership for Campus Internationalization”; “Surviving (and Thriving) in Interesting Times: Career Planning and Management for International Education Leaders Today”; “S.I.O. 101”; “Bologna & Global Impacts – What S.I.O.s Need to Know”; “Global Learning and Internationalizing the Curriculum”; and “Successful Strategic and Operational Approaches to Campus Internationalization.”

More than 100 concurrent sessions and showcases will take place February 20-22.

Many institutions of higher education are actively engaged in programs that further environmental and energy sustainability, broader access to health care and education, resolution of conflicts, pursuit of fundamental human rights, economic development, and greater cross-cultural understanding in the U.S. and around the world. The 2012 A.I.E.A. Annual Conference provides a forum to reflect on the relationship between the internationalization of institutions and institutional responses to these important global challenges. Conference subthemes include “Administrative and logistical needs of colleges and universities as their international commitments grow”; “Defining values in internationalization”; “Recognizing and managing impact”; and “Partnerships, consortia and networks.”

Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) annual conference will convene 22-24 May 2011 in Vienna, Austria

The following announcement about the upcoming 2011 Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) annual conference is mostly a copy and past job from a recent SECUSS-L post by Laura Rumbley, Deputy Director of ACA and I am reposting with her permission.  While I am not a member and have not attended an ACA conference (not yet anyway!) I have been a fan of what they have been doing in the field and have been following their work for many, many years.

The ACA 2011 Annual Conference will convene 22-24 May 2011 in Vienna, Austria. This event will present an outstanding roster of speakers providing unparalleled insight into the conference’s highly compelling theme: “The excellence imperative. World-class aspirations and real-world needs”.

FEATURED SPEAKERS (among others):

*  Jamil Salmi (coordinator of tertiary education for the World Bank)
*  Hans de Wit (Professor of Internationalisation and Special Senior Policy Advisor International at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands)
*  Eva Egron-Polak (Secretary General of the International Association of Universities)
*  Helga Nowotny (President of the European Research Council)
*  Ellen Hazelkorn (Vice President Research and Enterprise, and Dean of the Graduate Research School, Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland)

DESCRIPTION:  Recent years have witnessed the emergence of a new paradigm: that of the world-class university.  The paradigm is closely linked to the parallel emergence of international institutional rankings and league tables, which rely heavily on criteria almost exclusively related to research, mostly in the ‘hard’ sciences.  But higher education institutions around the world differ immensely in mission and activity focus, and only some of them are truly research-led. Teaching-focused universities and colleges, the vast majority of higher education institutions, almost by definition fail to qualify as “world-class” in this sense, because they aspire to other forms of excellence than those measured by international rankings.

This conference will explore the question of what makes an excellent university or college. In doing so, it will consider not only the research function of higher education, but also its educational role – teaching and learning – and manifold OTHER functions and missions, such as higher education’s role in maintaining and building civil society, in addressing today’s global challenges, and in international cooperation, amongst others. In other words, it is intended to seek to identify different forms of excellence, geared to different aspirations.

TARGET AUDIENCE:  ACA seminars typically attract university leaders, and program and department directors, as well as a smaller number of higher education scholars, researchers, policymakers and graduate students interested in international higher education issues.

FOR MORE INFORMATION:  The full program, list of speakers, and registration details can be consulted via the conference website here.  Specific enquires may be directed to info@aca-secretariat.be

ABOUT ACA:  ACA is a think tank-like organization focused on international higher education issues mostly, although not exclusively, in Europe. We also serve as a membership organization, currently with some 18 institutional members, all national-level agencies active in internationalization policy spheres and programming. The British Council, DAAD, Nuffic, CampusFrance, Universidad.es figure among our members, and IIE in the US is an associate member. ACA also produces a monthly newsletter (“ACA Newsletter – Education Europe”) and an occasional book series, the ACA Papers on International Cooperation in Education. In terms of events, in addition to the annual conference, ACA organizes a European Policy Seminar (EPS) series every year, typically comprised of four one-day events in Brussels. Our next EPS event will be held on 18 March 2011, under the title “Brazil, India, Russia, China. Key points on the European higher education compass?”

2011 Global Forum on Borderless Higher Education Vancouver, Canada - May 25-27, 2011

The following is a copy and paste job of pertinent information related to the 2011 Global Forum on Borderless Higher Education that I recently received in an e-mail from the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education and obtained from their website:

Speakers invited to participate in the 2011 Global Forum include:

· Brenda Gourley, former Vice Chancellor, The Open University (UK);

· Choon Fong Shih, President, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Saudi Arabia);

· Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, Vice Chancellor, Universiti Sains Malaysia (Malaysia);

· Lou Anne Simon, President, Michigan State University (USA);

· Svava Bjarnason, International Finance Corporation (World Bank); and

· Lloyd Axworthy, President, University of Winnipeg (Canada).

The 2011 Global Forum will delve into a variety of critical topics that are transforming borderless higher education.  These include:

A. Global Regionalism

The emergence of regional higher education networks for building partnerships, facilitating interregional student mobility, and fostering greater awareness and connections of common cultural, social, language, and heritage across the region.

B. Private Partnerships
What are some of the emerging trends in private partnerships in tertiary education? How do they affect the internationalisation strategies of universities? What role does geography play in forging private partnerships?

C. Student Mobility
As student migration is changing at a dynamic pace, an understanding of the factors influencing where students study is critical for success. How can higher education institutions attract more international students? What is driving the decision of many youth to study outside their home countries? How can universities increase the outbound mobility of their students?

D. Open and Distance Learning
Global applications of open and distance learning systems in borderless higher education at the regional and global levels. Moreover, the use of ODL delivery systems to provide HE access to underserved student populations, working adults, and geographically isolated rural communities and cultures.

E. International Quality Assurance
The shifting and changing landscape of quality assurance and assessment models for ensuring quality in borderless higher education programmes. Will the challenging fiscal environment for higher education be a catalyst for more diploma mill providers and low-quality providers attempting to take advantage of this depressed market?

F. The Transnational Student Experience
The services that enhance the holistic student experience for international students and successful models for providing these services. How are issues of culture, language and social 'norms' of international students addressed in curriculum and assessment?

You can learn more and register for the 2011 Global Forum here.  The 2011 Global Forum coincides quite nicely with the 2011 Annual NAFSA conference which is also taking place in Vancouver from May 29-June 3, 2011 which you can learn more about here.

NAFSA Poster Sessions Focusing on International Education Research or the Links between Scholarship and Practice

I'm re-posting the following SECUSS-L post by my colleague Bryan McAllister-Grande about the upcoming proposal submission deadline for two NAFSA Vancouver poster sessions with his permission (there are other poster sessions as well which you should consider as well):

Following are two different poster sessions that involve international education research or the links between scholarship and practice. The poster fair proposal deadline is coming up next Wednesday, December 15 -- there is still plenty of time to get a brief idea together.

*International Education to What End? Peace & Justice and Global Citizenship Revisited*
In partnership with the Peace, Justice & Citizen Diplomacy special interest group, this poster fair showcases the connections and synergies between on- and off-campus international education and education for peace and justice. It introduces relevant concepts such as global citizenship and public/citizen diplomacy, and demonstrates ways in which international educators currently play a role in fostering peace and justice. The fair also presents resources and relevant research available for this work.   Poster Fair organizers are Samantha Martin (martins@newpaltz.edu) and Bryan McAllister-Grande (bgrande@brandeis.edu).

*International Education Research*
Posters feature the most recent innovative and in-depth qualitative and quantitative research in the field of international education. They highlight important findings, perspectives, and academic inquiries in order to stimulate collaboration and provide tangible professional resources and educational understanding. Organizer is Yuliya Kartoshkina (yuliya.kartoshkina@und.edu)

You can find all relevant information and the online proposal system at
http://www.nafsa.org/annualconference/default.aspx?id=3199

Please don't hesitate to contact the organizers for questions or to brainstorm ideas.
