Just three random pieces of literature I pulled from my Bury Book International Education Library & Archive at home and I thought I would post photos of their covers.

I always stop at a box full of free books just in case there is a book related to international educational and cultural exchange...

Today on my walk back to the office after getting some vaccines for upcoming international higher education consulting travel I'm doing in August to Accra, Ghana I stopped by Powell's Books Chicago to see what they had for free in the boxes outside their store.  I lucked out and discovered the book Grand Tours and Cook's Tours: A History of Leisure Travel, 1750-1915 (1997) by Lynne Withey. Many know of my interest in the history of international educational and cultural exchanges and this book will be an excellent addition to my Bury Book International Education Library & Archive.  I just wrote (briefly) about the grand tours of old for my part of a co-authored chapter that was submitted as a first draft to one of the book editors so the timing of this find is perfect as I imagine some revisions will be needed and I might try to work this book into the text and references.

Lily von Klemperer on Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad

As many IHEC Blog readers know, I enjoy learning and writing about the history of international educational and cultural exchange and I'm quite excited about the formation last year of the AIFS/AIFS Foundation Education Abroad Special Collection which is a project of the Forum on Education Abroad in partnership with Dickinson College, the American Institute For Study Abroad (AIFS) and the AIFS Foundation.  I enjoy the history of the field so much that several years ago I created the Bury Book Internaitonal Education Library & Archive and have received donated materials from some of the biggest names in the field and get several requests a year about visiting for research (it's currently in my home office which adds some challenges to have visitors).

This week the Forum on Education Abroad held a celebration at the Special Collection at Dickinson to honor the establishment of the center and to showcase some of the donations made thus far.  You can see photos from the event on the Forum's Facebook page and Twitter account.

In the May 23, 2014 Forum News, a note about an interview from 1988 by Tom Roberts with Lily von Klemperer was released on the Forum's YouTube Channel.  Both are pioneers in the field and I'm honored to have met Tom and to have shared a beverage (or more) with him but I never met Lily.  I'm a huge fan of her work and to watch this brief video made my day!

Not only did I receive an e-mail about a potential evaluation/assessment project but I received the following book (hard cover) in the mail (benefit of JSIE Editorial Board membership):

The SAGE Handbook of International Higher Education (2012) edited by Darla K. Deardorff, Hans de Wit, John D. Heyl, and the late Tony Adams.

Now that I'll be done with my dissertation (I defend tomorrow and submit final manuscript by April 1st)  I will be able to read this book and do a more formal review for IHEC Blog.  It will also be a lovely addition to my Bury Book International Education Library & Archive!

New Book: Developing Strategic International Partnerships: Models for Initiating and Sustaining Innovative Institutional Linkages edited by Susan Buck Sutton and Daniel Obst

I want to highlight a relatively new book in the field for IHEC Blog readers.  I have been wanting to post about this new book since it was released back on December 5, 2011 but my busy schedule prevented that from happening.  Additionally, I wanted to read as much of the book as possible before posting which is why I'm posting today and not back in December.  

Developing Strategic International Partnerships: Models for Initiating and Sustaining Innovative Institutional Linkages is edited by Susan Buck Sutton and Daniel Obst and published by the Institute of International Education with support from the AIFS Foundation.  This publication is the sixth report in the IIE/AIFS Foundation Global Education Research Reports series [I have reports 1-4 and now 6 in my Bury Book International Education Library & Archive].


This book is a key resource of IIE’s Center for International Partnerships, which supports colleges and universities in developing strategies and identifying institutional partners (www.iie.org/cip).


I have read a majority of Developing Strategic International Partnerships and I have found it to be invaluable to my work in my current professional position at The Booth School of Business at The University of Chicago.  My work in the International Programs Office at Chicago Booth [where I started working in September 2011] has a heavy focus on international partnerships for the International Business Exchange Program (IBEP) that I manage and Developing Strategic International Partnerships could not have been published at a better time for me as much of that work is new to me!


While I was reading Developing Strategic International Partnerships I could not help from straying away from the practical insight this book provides me to how this book feeds my scholarly and research interests in the field.  This book has generated a number of research questions for me ponder!
