My Brief Thoughts on the Via TRM BOLD Seminar Held July 14-16, 2020 #viaBOLD2020

Last week I attended the Via TRM BOLD Seminar and I thought it was excellent!  I'm so glad that I was able to attend even though my schedule conflicted with two of the sessions.

I've never been good at taking notes during a lecture or presentation so I won't be summarizing my thoughts in that way here in this post. What I really appreciated was that Via TRM and the panelists did an excellent job of not turning the BOLD Seminar into a long discussion with session after session focused on COVID-19 and education abroad. To be sure these are important discussion to have and there will be an ongoing need in the field to have webinars, conference sessions and other types of engagement focused on COVID-19.  For me the BOLD Seminar brought back a sense of normalcy in terms of session topics that I found incredibly helpful and relevant to my work. In my work I deal with COVID-19 issues on a daily basis but I am also working to streamline and enhance the education abroad policies, processes and programming...in some ways I'm building the program from the ground up. The BOLD Seminar was incredibly timely for me as I need to be thinking and creating beyond COVID-19 and the sessions and panelists were very informative and helpful to me!

If Via TRM decides to hold another BOLD Seminar I highly recommend registering as it was affordable with quality content form the panelists! Congrats to the Via TRM team and to all the panelists on a job well done and hopefully we'll see another seminar in the future! Many thanks!

Excited to be attending the Via TRM BOLD Seminar July 14-16, 2020 #viaBOLD2020

I will be attending the Via TRM BOLD Seminar today through Thursday and I plan to post here on IHEC Blog and related social media sites such as Twitter and IHEC Blog's Facebook page.

In full disclosure, I am a huge fan of Via TRM and have been for about 4-5 years now when I first learned of them and what Samantha Martin, Founder and CEO, has created and built. She is quite impressive and you can read her guest IHEC Blog post "Apply Now is Too Late in Education Abroad" here!

Register for the Via TRM BOLD Seminar

You can learn more about the sessions, presenters and content here. I'm excited to attend many of these sessions and engage in the discussion!

Institutional statements on DHS "Broadcast Message: COVID-19 and Fall 2020" barring international students from remaining in the U.S. if they take all courses online

July 14, 2020 update: A short time ago, DHS/ICE rescinded this guidance and Jessica and I will no longer be updating this list!

This list is being compiled in collaboration with my colleague Jessica Oldford, Director of Global Student Experience Global Initiatives, Stephen M. Ross School of Business, University of Michigan – Ann Arbor.

If you are aware of any institutional or association/organizational statements not listed please email David Comp at international.ed.consulting@gmail.com.

On Monday, July 6th, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued Broadcast Message: COVID-19 and Fall 2020 that will have a significant impact on the U.S. higher education community. This paragraph from the DHS Broadcast Message is the crux of the matter:

"Students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load
and remain in the United States. The U.S. Department of State will not issue visas to students
enrolled in schools and/or programs that are fully online for the fall semester nor will U.S.
Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States. Active
students currently in the United States enrolled in such programs must depart the country or
take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction to remain in
lawful status or potentially face immigration consequences including, but not limited to, the
initiation of removal proceedings."
