Keynote Speakers at International Education Conferences

A recurring thought I have that I decided to post to Twitter last night:

More and more I wonder why many keynote speakers are selected to speak at international education conferences as they really have nothing to do with international education. If they didn't speak the conferences would be more affordable & more IE professionals could attend.

"Director, what in your view... is the counterintelligence risk posed to U.S. national security from Chinese students, particularly those in advanced programs in science and mathematics?"

During an open hearing of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on worldwide threats on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio [R-FL] asked FBI Director Christopher Wray about “Director, what in your view... is the counterintelligence risk posed to U.S. national security from Chinese students, particularly those in advanced programs in science and mathematics?”

Wray replied “The use of non-traditional collectors, especially in the academic setting—whether it’s professors, scientists, students—we see in almost every field office that the FBI has around the country. It’s not just in major cities. It’s in small ones as well, it’s across basically every discipline. And I think the level of naivete on the part of the academic sector about this creates its own issues”

Further discussion between Senator Rubio and Director Wray continued about Confucius Institutes on U.S. campuses.

Promoting Inclusion in Education Abroad: A Handbook of Research and Practice edited by Heather Barclay Hamir and Nick Gozik, with Forward by Esther Brimmer, and co-published by Stylus Publishing and NAFSA in 2018. I just received this book yesterday in the mail!

I have a co-authored chapter with Lily Lopez-McGee (lead) and Eduardo Contreras entitled "Underrepresentation in Education Abroad: A Review of Contemporary Research and Future Opportunities"
