My Declining Presence at International Education Conferences

Over the past few years my attendance at international education conferences has dwindled.  I have missed the past three Forum on Education Abroad conferences (my last one was Portland in 2009) and the past two NAFSA: Association of International Educators conferences (my last one was Kansas City in 2010) and the past four CIEE conferences (my last one was Toronto in 2007).  I did manage to make it to the CIES conference in Chicago in 2010 to present but my time at this conference consisted of arriving 30 minutes before my presentation and leaving 30 minutes after my presentation ended so I really can’t say I attended the conference (my only CIES conference I have seen) as I only presented at the Chicago CIES conference.  This also sums up the amount of time I spent at the 2011 NAFSA Region V conference in Champaign, Illinois (my last NAFSA Region V conference was in 2004 in Ann Arbor, Michigan) as I was also in and out of the conference venue only to present and say hello to a few friends and colleagues.  I did attend the entire 2010 U.S. Summit for Global Citizen Diplomacy in Washington, D.C. and it was a worthwhile event.

There are several reasons for this decline such as dissertation conflicts, lack of funds (almost all of my previous conference participation was self-funded) or lack of support.

I do hope to attend the 2013 Forum on Education Abroad conference as it will be in Chicago and perhaps the NAFSA conference in St. Louis in 2013.  CIEE 2012 in Shanghai is definitely out for me but who knows about 2013 in Minneapolis!?!?!

I will attend the annual conference of the Partnership in International Management (PIM) in Lima, Peru in late October (in many ways PIM has become my new NAFSA) and next week I will attend the Peer Schools International Educators [group of top business schools in the U.S.]  meeting at Stanford Graduate School of Business for a couple of days (in many ways Peer Schools has become my new Forum although on a much, much smaller scale] so I’m not totally out of the conference/meeting circuit…it’s just changing!  Last month I attended my first Chicago NAFSA Roundtable meeting since I worked in the Office of International Affairs at The University of Chicago seven years ago.

CIEE Ping Doctoral Research Fellowships are back!

I’m very happy to learn that CIEE is offering the Ping Doctoral Research Fellowships again!  Following is a brief description of the Ping Fellowship that I copied and pasted from the February 16, 2011 CIEE News I received via e-mail.

CIEE is pleased, once again, to offer the Ping Doctoral Research Fellowships, providing support for doctoral research focused on U.S. undergraduate study abroad.

We invite Directors of Graduate Studies (or in the absence of a departmental DGS, a Chair) to nominate a qualified doctoral candidate for a Ping Fellowship. These Fellowships, funded through a small endowment, are named after Dr. Charles Ping, President Emeritus of Ohio University and a long-time former Chairman of the CIEE Board of Directors. 

During the 2011-2012 academic year, CIEE will provide up to two $20,000 Ping Doctoral Research Fellowships to outstanding doctoral candidates. Please visit the CIEE website for details about eligibility, requirements, and the nomination of candidates.

Literature obtained during the NAFSA Annual Conference & IHEC Blog Posts this Week

During the NAFSA conference I always find time to stroll through the exhibit hall.  I sometimes find it to be the most educational part of the conference.  To be sure, I’m always on the hunt for chotchkies for my kids and I think this year I did not disappoint!  I also started collecting pins (not buttons) from all of the various booths and I have a nice little collection going for the past three years.  More important, however, is that strolling through the exhibit hall provides an excellent opportunity for me to brush up on my anthropological and field/observational research skills (though I have no formal training in this area).  I find it very educational to see how various institutions, organizations, companies and countries present themselves to the field and I always find it fascinating to sit back and watch all of the people from all over the world interacting and working to establish exchanges/agreements as the exhibit hall is so much more than an us [U.S.] and them transaction.

Another practice of mine in the exhibit hall is searching for and collecting reports and books for my various research activities and to be housed in my Bury Book International Education Library & Archive.  NAFSA 2010 was exceptionally good to me as you can see from the photo pictured with this post (includes much of the literature I picked-up).  This week I will be highlighting some of literature I picked-up in the exhibit hall as well as some of the literature I was given (Many thanks IIE and MIUSA).  Additionally, I hope to post about a new publication about study abroad in the U.S. that I recently received.  To end this week I plan to post my video interview with Christopher Murphy, Senior Publications Director at NAFSA, as we discussed writing and publishing with NAFSA.

South Korea Scholarship Program

I just learned about an interesting new partnership between CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange and The Korea Foundation. Specifically, these two organizations have partnered to create the South Korea Scholarship Program which is a full, all expenses paid, scholarship program for U.S. high school and university students. According to the website, the South Korea Scholarship Program is “aimed at promoting awareness and understanding of Korea throughout the international community, and to enhance goodwill and friendship through the implementation of various international exchange programs.”

CIEE Ping Foundation Fellowships in Support of Study Abroad Doctoral Research

For the second consecutive year, CIEE: The Council on International Educational Exchange is offering the Ping Doctoral Research Fellowships. Snippets from CIEE’s website follow:

“Ping Doctoral Research Fellowships provide support for doctoral research focused on U.S. undergraduate study abroad. Funded through a small endowment, the Doctoral Research Fellowships are named after Dr. Charles Ping, a gifted teacher and scholar, a tireless advocate for the internationalization of U.S. higher education, President Emeritus of Ohio University, and a long-time former Chairman of the CIEE Board of Directors.

Nominations with all the documentation described (three complete sets) must reach the CIEE office no later than April 30th.

Looking for three documents from 1959 by Council on Student Travel (now CIEE)

A History of The Council on International Educational Exchange: 1947-1994 (2002) reports that the following documents were not preserved and their existence is unknown. In an effort to locate and preserve historical pieces of literature on international education I'm looking for the following three documents:

The Council on Student Travel: A Historical Memorandum (1959) by John E. Bowman

The Council on Student Travel As Seen Through The Eyes of Its Membership (1959) by Winifred Armstrong

An Analysis of Council Income, 1954-1959 (1959) by The Council on Student Travel
