The Latino Cultural Academy of Chicago
I recently learned of the Latino Cultural Academy (LCA) here in Chicago and it peaked my interest. LCA is a new all Spanish Latino cultural program for kids (5-7 and 8-10 years of age) based out of the Rafael Cintrón Ortiz Latino Cultural Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago. A brief description of the program from their website follows:
"We provide a cultural program focused on helping children develop an understanding of what it means to be Latino in a personally relevant way. Our approach focuses on creating a fun and engaging environment where children feel safe acquiring and retaining the Spanish language, as well as gaining an appreciation for the similarities and differences amongst the various Latino cultures. Our goal is to assist in the preservation of the Latino identity, culture and language in young children by sharing rich cultural traditions. The Latino Cultural Academy is in residence at UIC’s Latino Cultural Center."

The LCA will be holding two open houses where parents can meet staff, learn about the programs and view the facility. The specifics for the open houses follow:

Benefit for International Student from Northern Ireland who was Severely Beaten in Chicago
This is not a happy post but it is an important one.
On Friday, April 23, 2010, Natasha McShane, a 23 year old graduate student at the University of Illinois Chicago from Northern Ireland and her friend , 24 year old Stacy Starl Jurich, were brutally attacked and robbed by two assailants with baseball bats. Natasha’s family immediately flew here to Chicago and they have remained here during her recovery. As of June 10th Natasha started using her arms and talking and is now breathing without assistance but is still relearning how to eat and drink. Stacy Starl Jurich was also severely injured and her recovery is going better than expected. WorldChicago
The International Visitors Center of Chicago is now called WorldChicago. Here is a brief history of the organization that I obtained from the e-mail update I received:
"Our new name, WorldChicago, reflects the growth of our organization during the last 58 years. We are tied to the emergence of Chicago as an international city," said Peggy Parfenoff, executive director. "Our commitment to encouraging citizen diplomacy, one handshake at a time, has resulted in thousands of leaders and students learning more about Chicago and its people who are part of a vibrant professional, academic and cultural community."
With Chicago roots more than half a century old, starting in 1952 as the Hospitality Center of Greater Chicago and for the last 40 years as the International Visitors Center of Chicago, WorldChicago is a name that updates our image and allows us to expand our work in Citizen Diplomacy. WorldChicago will continue to host the same international exchange programs as the IVCC and will continue to host 800 visitors per year from all over the world."

U2 Live in Chicago on September 12, 2009
On September 12, 2009 I saw my 10th U2 concert and it was a good one (it was my wife's 8th show!). I thought I would go off topic today on IHEC Blog and create this online "bootleg" of the show with links to video on YouTube. Please note that these are not professional videos and were shot by people in the audience and each video provides a unique perspective of the concert including variations in the audio. NAFSA Chicago Roundtable Meetings for 2009-2010
The NAFSA Chicago Roundtable is a monthly meeting held during the academic year for international educators in the Chicagoland area (particularly for those who work with international students and scholars) and it has been happening ever since I entered the field when I started as an Assistant Director in the Office of International Affairs at The University of Chicago. Here are the details for this 2009-2010 academic year:

Chicago Sister Cities Acting Call

Chicago 2016 is looking for girls, ages 6 – 14, to participate in a film about Chicago’s Sister Cities. The girl’s family must be from the region of among Chicago’s 27 sister cities, and she should be able to say “Hello Sister” in the language of the region(with a parent’s or grandparent’s help is sufficient, but native fluency is preferred.)
We are also looking for boys in the same age range, but they do not need to have foreign language capabilities.

The Global Dimension of Walter Payton College Prep
Walter Payton College Preparatory High School, a Chicago Public School that specializes in mathematics, science and world languages, is a leader preparing the next generation of college students to be global citizens.
