  31. Thanks for updating 3/6/17, this day when the revised version was signed by the President.

The revised travel ban has so far received these two responses by organizations in American higher education:

“The president’s new executive order on immigration -- albeit an improvement over the original order banning immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries -- remains overly broad in scope and threatens to adversely impact higher education in America,” the American Association of State Colleges and Universities said in a written statement. “While we understand and respect the president’s stated goal of securing our homeland, we also believe that a categorical ban on the entry of individuals based purely on national origin will undermine the ability of our public institutions to attract the best minds to teach and study at our state colleges and universities.”
“We are concerned that the executive order announced March 6 may be implemented in a manner that will continue to restrict travel to the United States, and negatively impact students and scientists who seek to work and collaborate with their peers in the United States,” Rush Holt, the chief executive officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, said in a written statement. “Scientific progress depends on openness, transparency and the free flow of ideas; these principles have helped the United States attract and benefit from international scientific talent. Impacts to U.S. leadership in science, technology and innovation should be considered in development of immigration and visa policy.”

  32. Hi David,

    Here are two more -

    1) from the North American Victorian Studies Association (via a colleague in the Association) -

"NAVSA’s Statement on Non-Discrimination in Response to U.S. Executive Actions

The North American Victorian Studies Association strongly condemns the discriminatory actions of the Trump administration, including the executive order limiting the entry to the United States of refugees and of citizens from predominantly Muslim countries. This order is unethical in its racism and Islamophobia and anti-intellectual in its restriction of the free circulation of ideas and peoples. As scholars committed to academic freedom and social equality, we stand united with many other associations around the world in believing that such actions defy both humanitarian values and U.S. constitutional rights. As scholars of the Victorian period, in particular, we are opposed to forces that seek to return to the most regressive political and cultural elements associated with the nineteenth century. We applaud efforts to counteract the reinstitution of such practices, and we support the important work being done across various fields to address the history and current conditions of marginalized groups. (February 23, 2017)

NAVSA condemns the Trump administration’s February 2017 decision to rescind federal guidelines that protected transgender students from discrimination in public schools. As teachers, we recognize the damaging impact of discrimination in education and support those working to ensure equal treatment for all students. Moreover, we stand in solidarity with those working to uphold the constitutional rights of all LGBTQ citizens, particularly in light of rapid discriminatory changes to national and state policies. And 2) an updated statement from UCIEP.org -

"UCIEP advocates for all students who desire to study English at universities and colleges in the United States. Since our inception, UCIEP has fostered integrity, excellence, and collaboration in international education. Therefore, we stand against Executive Order 13769, which categorically prevents educators from promoting these values.

Furthermore, UCIEP opposes Executive Order 13780, which likewise undermines integrity, excellence, and collaboration in international education. While this travel ban is less broad, it continues to summarily suspend the issuance of new visas for students from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Sudan, and Yemen. Visa applicants are judged by their country of citizenship and not by their character or intent."
