Higher Education Institutional & Organizational Policies/Statements on Academic Travel to China Related to 2019-nCoV (Coronavirus)

March 17, 2020 Update

Jessica Oldford and I will no longer be updating this list here on IHEC Blog.  The Forum on Education Abroad has started a COVID-19 Program Status Tracker at https://forumea.org/covid-19-program-status-tracker/.  Jessica and I will collaborate with the Forum on Education Abroad on this tracking project and I encourage everyone to visit their COVID-19 Program Status Tracker page and contribute to the project via the instructions listed there.

----------
This list below was compiled in collaboration with my colleague Jessica Oldford, Director of Global Student Experience Global Initiatives, Stephen M. Ross School of Business, University of Michigan – Ann Arbor.

Click on the name of each institution or education abroad provider to read current statements/policies on academic travel to China.  This list does not include institutions or programs that have indicated that they currently do not have students, faculty or staff in China.

Following are two resources that I find very helpful in putting 2019-nCoV in perspective and I thank Mark Ashwill of Capstone Vietnam for putting them on my radar:

1. "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that so far this season, there have been at least 15 million flu illnesses for the 2019-2020 season, 140,000 hospitalizations and 8,200 deaths in the U.S. The CDC reports there have been 54 reported flu-related pediatric deaths this season from Influenza B viruses." via https://thehill.com/changing-america/well-being/longevity/480089-coronavirus-sparks-panic-as-flu-poses-greater-threat-to

If your institution or organization has released a policy/statement on academic travel to China and it's not on the list please let me know either via comment on this post or via email at international.ed.consulting@gmail.com.

    January 29, 2020

    MEMORANDUM

    TO: UNCG Faculty

RE: Important Information: Novel Coronavirus 2019

In addition to the general email that was sent this morning, please take the following into consideration regarding the University’s response to the novel Coronavirus 2019:

    · Students who traveled to China over the winter break may still be in the incubation period for the virus now. We are working to ensure that we are aware of students or scholars who have recently traveled from these areas, but if a student makes you aware that they have recently returned from China, please have them contact Student Health for guidance.

    · No UNCG students will be participating in study abroad programs facilitated by UNCG in China this semester.

    · Because the CDC has issued a Level 3 (Avoid all non-essential travel) Travel Warning regarding travel to China, UNCG is suspending all university-sponsored travel to China for undergraduate students until the outbreak resolves.

    · Current measures by the Chinese government to control the spread of the virus have made travel within the country difficult. And, some airlines have suspended flights in and out of China.

    · Therefore, faculty are urged to give serious consideration before traveling to China. University-sponsored travel to China for faculty, staff or graduate students will not be permitted unless it is deemed to be essential.

    · With all this said, please help us maintain an evidence-based, informed approach to this situation by encouraging those with questions to consult the CDC Website or call Student Health. We anticipate that circumstances surrounding this virus may change rapidly over the coming weeks. We will continue to communicate with our community, but recommend the CDC Website for the most up-to-date information.

    · After meeting with Student Health Services this morning, we decided to create a method in which students, faculty, and staff can ask coronavirus related questions that may not be answered through the various sources of information referenced (CDC, Department of Health and Human Services, etc.).

    · We know some questions may require a UNCG-specific answer. We are placing a link to a form on the Student Health Services' Health Alert webpage that will allow students, faculty, and staff to ask us questions. These questions will be automatically sent to the UNCG Communicable Disease Committee for discussion and response, or we will elevate the question to the most appropriate person if it is outside the scope of the committee. It is our goal to answer questions within 24-hours of them being submitted, but obviously responding as quickly as possible.

    · To ensure both coordination of internal stakeholders and coordination with the various external authorities involved in monitoring this situation, Zach Smith, Director of Emergency Management, will be providing leadership for the University’s ongoing response.

    Thank you.
