Foreign Students and the Beijing Imperial Academy (Temple of Confucius at Beijing) during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties

Back in November 2013 I attended the Partnership in International Management (PIM) conference in Beijing, China.  After the conference I spent the weekend in Beijing with my friend Weidong (Jim) and he took me to all of the sites including the Great Wall of China.

One of the places he took me to visit was the Temple of Confucius at Beijing.  Built in 1302, it is the second largest Confucian Temple in China after the one in Qufu.  I really enjoyed my visit and learned that the Imperial Academy, also known as Imperial College, was the highest educational institution in feudal China and it was the only school to enroll foreign students coming from top sending countries such as Korea, Russia, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand among others.

Following are several photos of my visit to the Temple of Confucius at Beijing and a three photos are of display signs highlighting the recruitment of foreign students.

Video of the Week – Host a Foreign Exchange Student PSA

For this video of the week I selected this PSA from www.HostStudents.org.  This PSA is part of the “Host Exchange Students” campaign.  Here is a more detailed description of this campaign that I’m quoting from the HostStudents YouTube Channel:

“Working in conjunction with the U.S. Department of State and the youth exchange community, the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET) is pleased to announce the launch of a joint public service announcement campaign: "Host Exchange Students." The campaign encourages American families and schools to get involved in citizen diplomacy by opening their communities to foreign exchange students.”

NPR on Interest of Foreign Students on Studying in the U.S. Despite World Economy

Many IHEC Blog readers may find an article with audio entitled “Despite Expense, Foreigners Pursue U.S. Degrees” from NPR to be of interest. You can access the article here.

Yesterday, the Council on Graduate Schools in the United States issued a press release entitled “ International Graduate Application Trends Vary by Country and Field” and report that there was an 4% overall increase in the number of graduate school applications from prospective international students in 2009 but that they “varied dramatically by sending countries and fields of study.” You can read the CGS press release and link to the full report here.

The Pearson Test of English

In today’s insidehighered.com I found an interesting article about the publishing company Pearson throwing its hat into the English language testing for college admissions. The Pearson Test of English, with time, will increasingly challenge the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which has experienced increased competition over the years from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). What’s unique about the Pearson Test of English is that it will provide institutions with applicant scores as well as digital recordings of the students speaking portions of the examination.
