New Book: "One White Face" by Hilary Corna

I recently received a copy of a new book called One White Face (2011) from the author Hilary Corna and I just finished reading it and I wanted to share here on IHEC Blog. I've been aware of her book since it was published but had yet to locate a copy so I was very happy to receive a copy form Hilary in the mail.

One White Face is a personal account of Hilary's experiences of being the only Caucasian working for Toyota Motor Asia Pacific as well as her experiences of being a female in a male dominated business culture and society. During her three year sojourn throughout Asia, Hilary excels in her work and earns the respect of her colleagues and mentors at Toyota and along the way she discovers more about herself. I really enjoyed reading One White Face as it provided a wonderful and detailed account of a young woman's (Hillary's) journey into the experience of a lifetime.

As much as I would like to place One White Face on the shelves of Bury Book International Education Library & Archive that will have to wait. I'm first going to give the book to my ten year old daughter Gabriela to read. I think Gabriela will find the book fascinating and it will further develop her interest and curiosity in foreign travel and studies. More important is that I think Hilary is a very motivating young woman and I want her story to further inspire Gabriela to seek her own adventurous path (domestic or foreign) throughout her life.

NAFSA: Association of International Educators Committee has charged a task force within its International Student and Scholar Regulatory Practice (ISS-RP) to analyze and make recommendations for government agency liaison regarding the regulatory challenges of nonimmigrant participation in nontraditional programs (hybrid, low-residency, distance/online, short-term ESL, professional training, and others). A survey has been created to gather data to help internally inform the task force. Please take this important survey here.

We are also seeking specific examples of institutions finding it impossible or difficult to implement nontraditional programs due to regulatory or visa issues. Please e-mail your examples to Steve Springer, Director of Regulatory Practice Liaison, NAFSA staff at steves@nafsa.org.

Study abroad is easy and a good way to increase one's grade point average! True or not true? Discuss...

I posted this question over on IHEC Blog's Facebook page a short time ago and there wasn't much discussion so I thought I would post here to see what people think.

I typically post a study abroad related tweet of the day on IHEC Blog's Facebook page and I find the most interesting and provocative tweets to come from the students themselves who are preparing to study abroad and those who are currently studying abroad or those who have recently returned from study abroad [there is some great qualitative data on study abroad out there on Twitter that is worth mining if you ask me!] As the autumn semester/quarter comes to an end I have seen an uptick in tweets about grades and grade point averages and my interpretation of all of these tweets is that the students feel study abroad is easy and provides a boost to their grade point average (GPA). Following are two such tweets that helped form my analysis:

"SERIOUSLY. Why do study abroad grades not count towards my GPA. 3 As and an A- sofar. 3.92 GPA. I would love that to count thanks. #fuckk"

"can't bring myself to study when i know i only need a 20% to pass the class #studyabroad #passfail"

If I were to poll my study abroad colleagues here in the U.S. about the academic rigors of study abroad programming I anticipate an overwhelming consensus that high academic standards and expectations are well established across the field and that the majority of programs are not a GPA boost.

Conversely, if I were to poll current/recent study abroad students I anticipate an overwhelming consensus that #studyabroad is indeed a GPA boost.

What are your thoughts on this...and what's up with a course that requires 20% to pass?!?!?

For the record, study abroad was indeed a rather large GPA boost for me as I received some of the best grades in my college career while I "studied" in Valladolid, Spain. I'm not saying I didn't learn anything when I studied abroad. In fact, I learned more when I studied abroad than I did in any other semester during my college career...

Coping with Anti-Americanism: A Guide to Getting the Most Out of Studying Abroad

A short time ago I received a copy of the new book Coping with Anti-Americanism: A Guide to Getting the Most Out of Studying Abroad (2011, Potomac Books) from the author Carol Madison Graham. When I saw that this book had been published earlier this year I reached out to the author (I had already been following her blog Engage Abroad! and had interacted briefly a few times on Twitter) and asked if I could review her book on IHEC Blog. I ended up with my own copy to include on the shelves of Bury Book International Education Library & Archive!

I really enjoyed reading Coping with Anti-Americanism and feel it is a must read for prospective U.S. study abroad students and their parents as well as for the greater international education community and other campus/organizational stakeholders. Graham provides the reader with a clear picture of the realities American students face while abroad and she puts into perspective their place in the world outside of U.S. borders. Graham's work challenges U.S. students to take a step back and do some critical thinking on how the U.S. is viewed abroad and how they will be viewed and how they will represent the U.S. while studying abroad. In addition to providing prospective U.S. study abroad students with valuable insight and guidance on how to cope with the anti-Americanism abroad they are bound to encounter this book is a valuable guide for study abroad program staff to inform discussions with students and their parents as well as for preparing pre-departure orientations and related meetings.

“Student Insight: Why Students Use Agents” focuses on how students around the world view education agents when pursuing overseas study, and how expectations for services vary from region to region

Why do international students use education agents when making the decision to study overseas? What are the services they seek and what are the informational needs that are currently going unmet? The boom in international higher education has prompted increased demand for education agents, and the nature of that demand is studied in a report by Education Intelligence, the British Council’s global service.

Student Insight: Why Students Use Agents – Demand and Supply examines the global use of education agents through the perspective of prospective students who seek professional advice and guidance when considering overseas study. Without a doubt, the role of agents is controversial -- some in the international education sector view agents as neutral advisors while others see them as profit-seeking middlemen. However, despite the pros and cons, there is value in simply understanding the geographic nuances behind what is being mistakenly viewed as a monolithic trend.

“No matter the controversy, the fact that education agents have become a global industry is undeniable,” says Elizabeth Shepherd, Research Manager at Education Intelligence and author of the report. “We must step away from the debate and understand how differently prospective students and their parents view agents, depending on where in the world they live.”

Some highlights from Student Insight: Why Students Use Agents:

· Due to a lack of reliable internet access, African students may pursue an agent’s services simply to get information
· In South Asia, the service most sought after from agents is information on obtaining a visa
· Europe shows the lowest percentage of respondents who might use agents, likely due to relative standardization of education environment
· In China, foundation course and English language students are more likely to use agents
· Indian students who have previously studied overseas are less likely to use an education agent
· Students interviewed in Beijing viewed agents as responsible and quick to react
· In Guangzhou, students interviewed said agents did not provide adequate information on the visa application process

The 2012 AIEA Annual Conference focuses on "Building A Secure World Through International Education"

Catering to senior international officers from around the world, the 2012 Annual Conference of the Association of International Education Administrators (A.I.E.A.) focuses on “Building a Secure World through International Education.”

Taking place February 19-22 at the J.W. Three U.S. Students Arrested in Cairo

Reports (now confirmed) indicate that three U.S. students studying in Cairo have been arrested and charged with throwing Molotov cocktails from atop the American University Cairo building near Tahrir Square and for not carrying passports. Bottom Eleven U.S. States Receiving International Students in 2010-11

I've been reading much of the international, national, local and new media coverage pertaining to the release of the 2011 Open Doors data on Monday and it is all very exciting. The majority of the coverage has highlighted the increased numbers (for both international students and U.S. students abroad) or the "Top" schools sending U.S. students abroad, the "Top" schools receiving international students, the "Top" academic disciplines of U.S. students study abroad, the "Top" sending countries of international students to the U.S. and so on...

Some IHEC Blog readers and many of my friends and colleagues in the field know that I sometimes like to take a different look at the Open Doors data (and sometimes a much more in depth look at the data) and post what I find. Sometimes I hope my posts lead to further dialogue and debate in our field and sometimes my intent is simply to provide data that, most likely, is not presented in other places. This post today probably falls under the later but I could be wrong.

Following are the bottom eleven U.S. states* receiving international students during the 2010-11 academic year:

#42 New Hanpshire
#43 Mississippi
#44 West Virginia
#45 Idaho
#46 Montana
#47 South Dakota
#48 Maine
#49 Wyoming
#50 Vermont (article "Vermont's modest global draw" in the Burlington Free Press)
#51 Alaska

This list really doesn't say much but it would be interesting to go through the Open Doors data from the past several years and compare the lists to see ifwe can gain any insight into why these states comprise the bottom fifth of U.S. states receiving international students in 2010-11 and if they have historically fallen in the bottom fifth. While a historical and comparative review might provide some insight I think more analysis of additional variables is necessary to fully understand why this is the case. Know the total number of higer education institutions in each state would certainly be helpful but I think looking back to see if these states have issued state proclamations in support of international education, which may lead to resource allocation in an effort to market the state as a study abroad destination for international students. Four states from this group of eleven issued a proclamation in support of International Education Week 2010. Another indication of state level support for international education and valuing international students is to see if these states have established (and hopefully active) consortium working to highlight the state as a study destination for international students. To my knowledge, of these eleven states only West Virginia has established such a consortium called Study West Virginia at http://studywv.org/. Update Nov. 17th: The State of Mississippi also has an established consortium focused on bringing international students to the State. Study Mississippi has a website http://studymississippi.us AND they are on Twitter at @studyMS. Another colleague on Twitter reports that she is working to establish Study New Hampshire and that Study Vermont USA has recently been established.

I posted this list of bottom receiving states last night to IHEC Blog's Facebook page and a colleague, Lori Sjokolade, left a very interesting comment/observation about one reason these states may be the bottom receiving schools. Lori makes the point that:

"one thing these states have in common is that they are all EPSCoR states. No surprise that these states rank the lowest since science and engineering are amongst the top fields that international students choose to study in the United States and these states are amongst those that have been identified as needing help in boosting their science and engineering competitiveness."

I hadn't even though about this aspect but I think this is a very valid point.

The 2011 Open Doors data will be released by IIE this coming Monday, November 14th. I attended the release last year at the National Press Club and it was a great experience. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend this year but I will be checking out the data and posting some thoughts to IHEC Blog.

When I first visit the Open Doors website I first turn to the student profile data within the study abroad section. I'm interested in seeing what progress, if any, has been made in changing the face of the U.S. study abroad population. To be sure, I spend a lot of time sifting through the data and crunch some of the numbers to provide additional insight not covered by IIE Research and Program Evaluation Services staff.

20th Anniversary Slide Show Video of the National Security Education Program

The National Security Education Program is perhaps my favorite scholarship (and even over the Fulbright U.S. Student Program) and I'm happy to see it reach 20 years!

David Mize Undergraduate Scholarship Program through AMIDEAST

I recently learned about a great scholarship called the David Mize Undergraduate Scholarship Program for Egyptian students to study and obtain a degree in the United States that is offered by the AMIDEAST Egyptian Office and I want to share more information here on IHEC Blog to help promote this opportunity!

The following snippet is from the AMIDEAST website provides more description of this scholarship:

"The David Mize Scholarship program supports undergraduate students for four years of study at top U.S. universities. The value of the award is up to $50,000 US Dollars per year and requires that awardees secure additional outside support. This merit-based scholarship seeks well-rounded students with excellent grades, test strong cores, robust extracurricular activities and demonstrated leadership qualities. The scholarship is named after David Mize, former AMIDEAST/Egypt Country Director, in recognition of his leadership in the field of international education."

Please help spread the word about this great scholarship by putting it on the radar of your Admissions Office and/or Recruitment Office so they can promote it during their interactions with prospective undergraduate students from Egypt. The Study Abroad Fund for my Children

I already started a study abroad fund for my 10 year old daughter and my 6 and 3 year old sons. The pot is small but it needed to be started. I think I actually need a fund for high school exchange programs and a fund for international experiences at the the college level.

Are U.S. Students who Study in Non-Western Countries More Serious Students?

I posted the following to IHEC Blog’s Facebook page a short time ago and thought I would post here to see what readers think.

I recently read an article that suggested that U.S. students who study abroad in the Middle East or in Asia or in Africa or in Latin America are more serious students than those who study in Europe or Australia. I think the point they were making is that many U.S. students who go to Europe and Australia are there to party while those students who select non-Western locations are more focused on the educational experience/opportunities.

What are your thoughts on this? I think there is a bit of truth to this statement as I was an exchange student in Germany twice during high school (a month long program through my high school both times) and I "studied" abroad in Spain for a semester during my undergraduate studies.

The First Chinese Student to Graduate from a University in the United States

As I continue to settle into my new home and begin to bring Bury Book International Education Library & Archive out of hibernation I am rediscovering all kinds of great and rare publications that focus on international education.

One such publication that I found tonight is: A Survey of Chinese Students in American Universities and Colleges in the Past One Hundred Years (1954). Written in commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the graduation of the first Chinese student from an American University, Yung Wing, B.A. from Yale in 1854. This publication was published under the joint sponsorship of the National Tsing Hua University Research Fellowship Fund & the China Institute in America). Based on a quick skim of this publication I learned that were a decent number of Chinese students studying in the United States during the last half of the Nineteenth Century and into the early Twentieth Century. Upon completion of my dissertation this will be one of the first publications I read.

After doing some searching on Google I discovered that Miami University (as do a few other institutions) has this publication in their library holdings.

The National Security Education Program celebrates 20 years

On September 8, 2011 the National Security Education Program (NSEP) celebrated 20 years in Washington, D.C. with the author of the 1991 legislation Senator David L. Boren, currently President of the University of Oklahoma, in attendance. At the celebration, Senator Boren and Dr. Clifford Stanley, Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, addressed the Boren Fellows, Scholars, members of the NSEP Board as well as other lucky international educators and stakeholders in attendance.

Two days prior to this 20th anniversary celebration, on September 6, 2011, I started a new job at Chicago Booth (The Business School at The University of Chicago) as the Associate Director for International Programs. I am very excited and fortunate to have landed this new position but I must admit I will miss much of my previous work as the Senior Adviser for International Initiatives in The College and as Assistant Director in The Office of International Affairs, both at The University of Chicago. In particular, for the past eleven years I served as the Fulbright Program Adviser for the U.S. Student Program and as the Campus Representative for the Boren Awards for International Study/NSEP and it is the advising of prospective applicants to both of these Fellowship/Scholarship competitions that I will truly miss. I must confess that my favorite group to work with has been the Boren/NSEP applicants as this is a small, select and focused group of young women and men. I like the Boren /NSEP program so much that I am focusing my dissertation research on the service requirement component of the program. The early history of the program is very fascinating, on many levels, and one that all students of international education should be familiar with (in my opinion) and that history will also be part of my dissertation. I got caught up in an end of summer slump on the dissertation front and this 20 year celebration of the NSEP has certainly been a motivator for me! More on all of that at at a later time...

I don't know about you but I am a big fan of RSS Feeds. I first learned of them several years ago while at the NAFSA Winter Leadership meetings when I was on the NAFSA Teaching, Learning & Scholarship (TLS) knowledge community team. However, I could not figure out how they worked so I missed out on several good years of use. About three years ago I tried again with Google Reader (Google is my preferred tool for my new media activities) and it one of the most valuable tools I use to keep up to date on international education related news and happenings. My Google Reader provides a great opportunity for me to share what I find on the internets with others who may find value in the information/resources.

Frequent IHEC Blog readers know that I like to research and post about the history of international educational exchanges. Recently I came across a set of four videos on the YouTube channel of the Austrian-American Educational Commission (AAEC) that I found incredibly interesting so I thought I would post them here. These very well produced videos make up a forty-five minute documentary directed by Georg Steinböck and based on interviews with generations of Austrian Fulbrighters from the 1950s to the present and with recent U.S. grantees. The documentary also includes historical footage, photos, and archival material.

On July 29, 2011 the United States Department of State announced that will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas will direct a concert later this year in Beijing in support of the 100,000 Strong Initiative. Below are two short videos of will.i.am talking about the importance of study abroad and international travel with a focus on inter-city youth experiencing these opportunities.

Now, I'm not a huge Black Eyed Peas fan (my wife and kids are fans so I know a bit about them and their music). However, I am a big fan of their song Where is the Love? from 2003 and if you listen to the song and lyrics (which I believe were created by will.i.am) then you can see that he has always embraced the idea of international/intercultural understanding. Budget Debate Advances on Hill for FY12 - NAFSA Highlights Key Priorities for International Education

In the midst of the debt ceiling negotiations here in the United States, the FY 12 budget debate is also heating up, and there is a lot at stake for higher education and international education. We've already seen the United States Department of Education cancel the Fulbright-Hays international research programs (if you are a U.S. citizen and would like to electronically sign a petition to Save Fulbright-Hays Programs you can do so here) due to budget cuts. The Department of Education also cancelled the Title VI American Overseas Research Centers (AORC) program (and you can electronically sign a petition to Restore Funding to American Overseas Research Centers here) due to the same budget cuts. And, just last week The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that the House Foreign Affairs Committee voted to to eliminate The East-West Center. According to the Chronicle, the legislation "would repeal a 1960 law that established the East-West Center, which allows American scholars, students, journalists, and government and business leaders to study, train, and conduct research with their counterparts from Asia and the Pacific. The nonprofit organization receives $21-million from the federal government and $10-million more from corporations, foundations, and other governments."

NAFSA: Association of International Educators is reporting today that CEO Marlene Johnson sent letters last week to key members of the House Appropriations Committee requesting their support in funding international activities in the Departments of State, Education and Commerce for FY 2012. You can read Marlene Johnson's letters here. NAFSA has also highlighted key international education priorities as the FY 2012 budget is debated in Washington, D.C. which you can read here. If you haven't yet joined NAFSA's Connecting Our World at http://www.connectingourworld.org/ I strongly encourage you to do so and you can be a voice for international education. There is more to Connecting Our World than just joining. You must take action when necessary and NAFSA makes it so easy it will literally take 20 seconds of your day to let your elected officials in Washington know the importance of international education programming to the United States.

All of this really shouldn't be a surprise. Back on October 28, 2010 I reported here on IHEC Blog that then Republican Senate Candidate for Pennsylvania Pat Toomey (now Senator Pat Toomey) had twice spoken on national media outlets as the November election neared about cutting funding and consolidating federal international educational exchange programs and funding (you can watch his interviews here). We have still not fully recovered from one of the worst financial crises in the history of the United States and, to be sure, we need to make budget cuts across the board (including to international education programming) but it is critical that your voice be heard because you can imagine how Mr. Toomey will vote (and there are many more of his colleagues out there that feel the same about international education programs).

Across the Atlantic our friends over in Europe think a bit different about international exchange programs and according to EurActive.com "Europe's most celebrated student exchange programme is set to win a 71% funding increase under European Commission plans for the 2014-2020 budget, with education and training schemes now all regrouped under the Erasmus brand. The education sector won the biggest percentage increase under the EU's long-term budget and is set to leap 71%, from €8.76 billion to €15.2 billion, for the period 2014-2020 under proposals submitted last week."

National Football League (NFL) Player Chad Lewis Highlights the Importance of Studying a Second Language

Chad Lewis is currently a player with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League in the United States. I came across this interesting video (below) on YouTube of Chad Lewis promoting the value of learning a second language, in his case the Chinese language, at BYU. Lewis has been to China multiple times to represent the NFL and in 2002 took a three nation trip to Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand. You can learn more about his travels here. Nice to see such support for foreign language study and international education from an NFL player!

Changing types of posts here on IHEC Blog

If you have been following IHEC Blog for a while then you may have noticed changes in the way I have been posting. IHEC Blog and my related activities are secondary to my family, employment and academic lives and things have gotten so busy over the past 6-12 months that I have had to change the way I post. I still strive to post to IHEC Blog daily (Monday-Friday) but over the past several weeks I've managed only two to three posts per week. What you will also notice is that I have been embedding much more video, documents and widgets into my posts with links to other resources than writing substantive pieces. Of my last ten posts (not including this one) I have embedded five videos, one document and one twitter feed widget and the three other posts were short paragraph posts. While these posts are less time intensive to prepare I do hope that they are informative and add some value to your work. My current posting patterns will most likely continue for some time as I work to complete my dissertation. About the dissertation...from July 18-29 I am taking off of work to focus on my dissertation and will probably not post anything (unless I write something this week and schedule to post or it is something I cut and discard from my dissertation that I think IHEC Blog readers may find of interest). To that end, posts to IHEC Blog's Facebook page and to Twitter will also decrease substantially.

Thanks for coming along for the ride so far and I hope you continue!

I am very excited to post about a new collaborative tool called The Connection for International Credential Evaluation Professionals (The Connection) for the professional international credential evaluation community. Following are more specifics about The Connection that I am posting with the permission of Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE).

The Connection is a new online community for the professional international credential evaluator. The Connection will bring together individuals from around the world to collaborate, share information, and access resources regarding admissions decisions, the determination of credential equivalencies, the articulation of professional standards, and the promotion of best practices in the field.

The online community provides a discussion forum, an events calendar, news updates, resources, and other tools and information to help credential evaluators do their jobs. We are alike. How short can a study abroad program be?

As I was searching for my "Study Abroad Related Tweet of the Day" for an IHEC Blog Facebook Page post I came across the following tweet:

"Morning TwitterLand. Just back from a week long MBA studyabroad in Santiago, Chile"

In an effort to continue the field's debate on short-term study abroad programming I ask myself can one really study abroad for a week? There are those in the field that say "yes" and there those in the field that say "no".

This ties in to the my April 4th IHEC Blog post "The Study Abroad Credential" and discussion.

Can one study abroad for a day?

A few years ago while advising a student on his Fulbright application he asked if he should list Myanmar down as a list of countries he had visited even though he had been there only three hours. Fulbright applications are not really wanting applicants to list countries visited while on vacation (although there can be a significant learning component to vacations, no?) so this was a good discussion. If he asked me if he should list a three hour visit/travel through the Principality of Liechtenstein I would have told him no. But Myanmar is a bit different in my mind and spending three hours in the country would be quite an interesting/educational experience (and one that few others have experienced) so I told him to list Myanmar as a country visited.

Did the Fulbrighter actually study abroad in Myanmar? I don't think so. Did the Fulbrighter have a meaningful educational experience in Myanmar? I do think so.

Did the MBA student study abroad in Chile? Perhaps there were classroom lectures and discussions but I would not call it study abroad if I had participated on this week long program. Did the MBA student have an educational experience abroad in Chile? Absolutely!

Just some random thoughts I have on a Monday morning. What are your thoughts?

Relationships of Assessment, Evaluation, Standards & Ethics in Education Abroad

Some time ago when I was involved more heavily with the Forum on Education Abroad's Standards of Good Practice Committee on the Standards Toolbox and as a consultant I spent much time thinking about the relationships between assessment, evaluation, standards and ethics in education abroad. As I was traveling one day I started to doodle various configurations of these relationships and upon return home prepared them on a single document to further spur my interest in and investigation of these relationships. At one point in time I was thinking that this would be the focus of my dissertation. Anyways, last night I was searching for some of my documents I have hosted over on Scribd and came across the document where I turned my doodles of these relationships into more concrete ideas. Following are just thoughts I had on this topic back in 2007 or so and I thought I would embed the document here on IHEC Blog to see what others think.

New "Smart Traveler" iPhone App by The U.S. Department of State

The United States Department of State has launched a new iPhone app called "Smart Traveler". Following is the description of the app on the iTunes app store:

"Smart Traveler, the official State Department app for U.S. travelers, invites you to see the world with easy access to frequently updated official country information, travel alerts, travel warnings, maps, U.S. embassy locations, and more. With Smart Traveler, you can create personal itineraries, add notes, and organize your trips. Smart Traveler also provides access to the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). Free STEP enrollment enables the State Department to better assist you in emergencies such as natural disasters, unrest in foreign countries, or lost/stolen passports overseas. During your travels, STEP can help your family and friends reach you in an emergency. Smart Traveler also provides quick access to the Department's Consular Affairs Facebook and Twitter pages. And for a bit of fun, you can shake your iPhone to information on a random country!"

You can learn more and download the app here. This new app will not only be helpful to individual travelers but could be a very beneficial and helpful tool to study/education abroad administrators in dealing with a crisis abroad.

This past weekend I worked the 507th Convocation at The University of Chicago and found it to be a great experience. As I watched the students receive their diplomas and heard their names called I recognized many from meetings I've had with them over the years to discuss the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, the DAAD, the Boren Scholarship, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, the Freeman-Asia Scholarship or the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship among others. Many students were successful in these competitions and many were not. Regardless of the outcome, many students took a leap and applied to these funding opportunities (some students applied to several) to have a meaningful international educational experience. It is this group of students that I will miss the most. These are the students who want to leave the comforts of their high speed cable/satellite/smart phone/internet connections behind; to be challenged on their viewpoint and to learn about and consider a different perspective; to see the larger world that they have dreamed and read about; and, to make a difference in this world. These are the students I want my children to become!

To the class of 2011 at The University of Chicago, and beyond, I wish you all the best and may you all travel to all corners of this world!

Kissing a 'Jersey Shore' Cast Member while Studying Abroad was Bad but is now OK

Last week TMZ.com broke the news the the University of Florida threatened to expel any of their students participating on their study abroad program in Florence, Italy if they were found to be partying with the cast of The Jersey Shore again. The cast of The Jersey Shore is currently filming their fourth season in Florence. Apparently, UF administrators (well one associate dean for undergraduate affairs and enrollment management) didn't like seeing one of the UF study abroad students partying and kissing The Situation on the television show Entertainment Tonight and sent an e-mail to students warning of further disciplinary action if they were to be seen with the cast again.

TMZ.com has updated the story and reports that UF has reversed their policy.

Call for Reviewers for Review of Global Studies Literature, No. 3

The "Review of Global Studies Literature" is an online collection of book reviews and insights written by international educators, discussing both theory and practice. The second installment went live this past December with contributions from the following individuals: Eduardo Contreras, Emily Gorlewski, Jerrod Hansen, Joe Hoff, Kevin Kehl, Gavin Sanderson, Tony Amante Schepers, Carolyn Sorkin, Kimberly Turner, Rebecca Vincent, and Virginia Wickline.

The editors of this project, Bryan McAllister-Grande and Rebecca Hovey (with support of the NAFSA TLS Research & Scholarship Subcommittee), are now planning for their third installment, targeted for January/February 2012. This installment will be thematic: the theme is "Sustainable Global Commitments in International Education." For this theme, we are especially seeking creative, longer review articles that analyze a particular issue, drawing upon several different recent books and the reviewer's professional expertise. This theme is meant to build off of the attention that "sustainability" is receiving at several different levels (including the upcoming NAFSA conference), and different intellectual and practical aspects of sustainability's relationship to international education.

Join us for the 6th annual Summer Institute for International Education at Madison College. The Summer Institute is a rich and rewarding opportunity for faculty to explore opportunities for the infusion of international content into their curricula. Hosted in vibrant downtown Madison, Wisconsin, this event brings together faculty participants from throughout the multistate region with expert presenters and panelists. The institute will focus on sessions to help faculty include international units or modules in undergraduate and community

college courses, but anyone interested is encouraged to attend.

The theme for 2011 is “Internationalizing the Undergraduate Business Curriculum.” The opening keynote address will be provided by Ulice Payne, Managing Member of Addison‑Clifton, LLC. Mr. Payne is an advisor regarding global trade compliance solutions and former CEO and president of the Milwaukee

Brewers. Mr. Payne’s address will focus on why international competencies are a critical part of educating students for life and work in a globally connected community.

Day two will include an opening plenary on the pedagogy of teaching International Business, including examples of internationalized business courses by Sachin Tuli, Director of International Programs at the Wisconsin School of Business. Additional speakers both days will include area studies scholars who will share information and trends about economics and business in their regions of scholarship, representatives

from business and industry who will discuss aspects of international trade and the key skills needed for entry into the arena of international business, and other content experts in the field.

The Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship (TLS) Knowledge Community of NAFSA is excited to announce the formal creation of its first award, and a call for nominations for the 2012 recipient:

~The Award for Innovative Research & Scholarship in Internationalization~

This annual award will honor those who have made substantial contributions to theoretical and practical questions that can be applied across the field of international education. We are specifically looking for "path-breaking" research & scholarship, from veterans and early to mid-career researchers alike, that has changed how we as international educators advance our work.

The inaugural award was given in 2010 to Josef Mestenhauser, former president of NAFSA and research pioneer. Professor Mestenhauser has also agreed to be a member of the first selection committee that will be reviewing nominations this summer. A group of experienced international educators and researchers will round out the committee, to be chaired by Dr. Rosalind Raby.

We are hoping to give the next award to an individual in early 2012. A call for nominations and criteria have been posted at www.nafsa.org/TLSaward. Nominations should be done by a peer or can be self-nominations, and must be accompanied by copies of works/publications to be reviewed. Nomination materials and questions should be addressed to tlsaward@nafsa.org

NOMINATIONS ARE NOW OPEN AND WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL JULY 15, 2011. THE RECIPIENT WILL BE SELECTED BY NOVEMBER 30, 2011.

Recently Missy Gluckman over at Melibee Global put out a call for 2 interns on Twitter to work on various projects that can be done remotely with expected time commitment of 2-3 hours per week. If I was looking to enter the field or was a newcomer in the field I would jump on this opportunity in a second. Why? 1. I would learn much from Missy; 2. I would learn much from the work I would do for Melibee Global; 3. I would make connections in the field which will lead to opportunities which will lead to more connections which will lead to more opportunities and so on; 4. the time commitment is flexible and very reasonable; 5. I would get a valuable recommendation from someone in the field of international education and, 6. while unpaid the compensation I would receive (in addition to what I mention above) will be realized at a later date! Unfortunately, I won't be attending the upcoming NAFSA annual conference but will be with everyone in spirit! I will be following the conference backchannel discussion via Twitter and the #nafsa11 hashtag which has already been pretty active (much more than last year) and that you can view below. I'm looking forward to crossing paths with friends and colleagues again at a future international education conference in the not too distant future I hope.
